SMASH FEEDS
SMASH Feeds is the charitable branch of SMASH that I started in April 2021 after a family friend told me about a unique interaction they experienced. This friend had pulled up to a center for Covid tests located near SMASH, and the workers who sold flowers around the area recommended that my friend try a burger from SMASH because “lots of people in fancy cars pulled up to try it.” My friend told me this story to celebrate how SMASH’s fame was growing, but it made me realize that SMASH was not accessible to the entire city because of its price point. I wanted to share the burger I had worked so hard to perfect with everyone in my community, so I created SMASH Feeds with the vague goal of giving out burgers to those who couldn’t usually afford them.
Since the flower market workers were the ones who inspired me to launch SMASH Feeds, I wanted the first event to be for their benefit specifically. Future events would eventually be much more organized, but for this first trial I simply brought over 30 bags of burgers to the nearby flower market. The general manager helped me carry these bags over, and in very basic Urdu, I explained to the flower market workers that I was giving these burgers to them for free. Since these workers were already familiar with SMASH, their faces immediately lit up as I handed out the bags. I always enjoy seeing people eat SMASH’s burgers, but the pure joy I witnessed from the workers as they took that first bite immediately made me vow to keep up this charity work.
After a few impromptu SMASH Feeds events I realized that we could more efficiently serve and expand our outreach by partnering with organizations to feed their residents. The first official SMASH Feeds event happened at Bali Memorial Trust - an all women's orphanage. I had initially planned on bringing all the girls out to SMASH for an outing and to try the burgers fresh, but I soon realized that it was more practical to bring the burgers to them. The lack of access to means of transportations meant that SMASH would have to arrange for buses - a difficult task during the peak of Covid-19. Instead, we sent burgers to Bali Memorial Trust, and this methodology eventually became key in serving significantly more shelters and orphanages. The staff at Bali Memorial Trust sent photos of the women enjoying SMASH’s burgers, and I was so happy to see this plan work that I pledged to allocate 10% of SMASH profits towards SMASH Feeds moving forward.
