Facing a Pandemic
Having started SMASH as a takeout stand in my backyard, I never had to consider the effects of Covid on restaurants. When SMASH officially opened as a business, Pakistan was in the middle of a Covid peak when dine-in was restricted. Other restaurants based around in-person dining were closing all around us and we realized that to succeed in covid times we would have to be able to sell burgers even in times of lockdown. After calculating that in-person dining would only account for a small minority of all our orders, we made the decision not to offer and invest in dine-in options. We offered customers the option to eat in their car so that they could enjoy the burger fresh and still come and eat during lockdowns.
This strategy led to almost overnight success, and customers were coming from all around Lahore to enjoy our burgers while other restaurants remained unavailable. Despite this influx of customers, running SMASH during a pandemic certainly came with its fair share of challenges. We faced issues with bun deliveries that caused us to run out of buns on a number of occasions, we lost our manager for four weeks due to Covid, and we even had to set up our own meat delivery system to maintain quality and ensure we had stock on-hand at all times. Despite these struggles, SMASH continued to thrive.
